World Mental Health Day

October 10 2018

Today is officially World Mental Health Day and the mental health topic for today is Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s).

Did you know that experiences of trauma in childhood (ACE’s) have been found to have a strong relationship to disease, disability, and early mortality? The Division of Violence Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in partnership with Kaiser Permanente conducted a study in the 90’s with over 17,000 participants. This study found that the higher the number of ACE’s a child experiences (Physical abuse, Sexual abuse, Emotional abuse, Physical neglect, Emotional neglect, Intimate partner violence, Mother treated violently, Substance misuse within household, Household mental illness, Parental separation or divorce, and/or Incarcerated household member), the more likely they are to suffer from health problems later in life.
