Virtual Instruction with a Social Emotional Lens

August 26 2020

As educators, you are continuously asked to do the impossible and time after time, have overcome any challenges in your way.  Educators have also proven to be some of the most adaptable people on the planet during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Incorporating SEL strategies into your teaching is one challenge that was given prior to COVID-19.  Now more than ever, however, it’s important to put the information gained from trainings, presentations, and workshops to use.  The New Jersey Education Association has provided some helpful ways to do this this by looking at virtual instruction with a social emotional lens.  Here’s what they said:

  • Be realistic about your own feelings
  • Be reassuring
  • Promote problem solving and contributions
  • Foster self-management and emotion regulation
  • Celebrate accomplishments
  • Be optimistically future-minded
  • Show and encourage empathy and perspective taking
  • Take care of yourself
