January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

 According to the Alamo Area Coalition Against Trafficking, nearly 20% of the 300,000 American victim cases of trafficking occur in Texas- a high number report their path being through the city San Antonio. Human trafficking is one of the most concerning issues of our time. The mental health of victims is severely affected as they may experience the following: 

  1. High Emotional Distress
  2. High Risk for psychological disorder
  3. High feelings of guilt, anger, self-blame, humiliation
  4. High cognitive concerns involving memory problems, confusion and poor concentration

 

Please note some potential indications of HT to keep in mind. Not one indicator or combination necessarily signals trafficking. These serve only as warning signs to look out for…

  1. Academic-Sudden Change in Academic Performance
  2. Behavioral- Avoids Eye Contact
  3. Physical- Visible Bruises/Scars
  4. Emotional-Exhibits Obsessional thoughts about someone or low self-esteem
  5. Social- Lives in an unstable or abusive home, and or/ has older partner
