Happy Hormones

March 24 2021

KidsHealth defines hormones as “chemical substances that act like messenger molecules in the body. After being made in one part of the body, they travel to other parts of the body where they help control how cells and organs do their work.” Four of these hormones have earned the title of the “Happy Hormones.”  These four hormones promote positive feelings including happiness and pleasure.

The four Happy Hormones are:

  1. Dopamine-the “feel good” hormone and neurotransmitter that plays an important part of the brain’s reward system.
  2. Serotonin-a hormone and neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood as well as your sleep, appetite, digestion, learning ability, and memory.
  3. Oxytocin-called the “love hormone” and helps promote trust, empathy, and bonding in relationships.
  4. Endorphins-your body’s natural pain reliever, which your body produces in response to stress or discomfort.

You can boost these naturally by:

  • Sunlight.
  • Exercise.
  • Laughter.
  • Food
  • Supplements.
  • Music.
  • Meditation.
  • Affection.
  • Pets.
  • Sleep.
  • Stress Reduction.
  • Massage.
